In 2007, Gustavo Moncayo became known as a fighter for the freedom of his son, Sergeant Pablo Emilio Moncayo, who was kidnapped by the FARC during the 1997 capture of the Patascoy base between Nariño and Putumayo, where 10 soldiers were killed. and 18 people were kidnapped.

Professor Moncayo, along with his daughter Yuri Tatiana, embarked on a trek of more than 1,000 kilometers from his hometown of Sandoná (Nariño) to Bogotá on June 17 of that year. However, the pilgrimage reached 2,509 kilometers through 14 countries.

Colombia’s then-president Álvaro Uribe blamed the FARC for the kidnapping. Moncayo demanded peace be given for the freedom of the abducted.

His son was released with the mediation of Piedad Córdoba, in a mission for which soldier Josué Calvo was also released on 28 March 2010.

Sergeant Moncayo took the chains his father had carried for four years to demand his release and peace in Colombia.

It was learned that he was hospitalized in mid-October due to an illness. deadly liver cancer. From his bed he continued his message for the peace of Colombia.

He lived in Canada with his family, but before he got sick, he decided to return to the country. The professor’s daughter, Yuri Tatiana Moncayo, said they were waiting for the FARC to pay for the transplant the man needed.

“It is impossible for us as victims to rebuild our project of life with symbolic reparations. The FARC has the capacity and possibility to do that, and we demand it because we need a transplant for my father. He is in danger of dying.”
