One of the aims of the country’s foreign policy is to ensure this. The United States is removing the visa requirement for Colombians to enter this region.

Ambassador Luis Gilberto Murillo gave some details on how the process is progressing in an interview with EL TIEMPO recently and even shared two new ideas he is considering to present to the North American country.

While the government reiterates that this is a process that could take years, it has already taken steps to speed up the process. For example, this is the first technical meeting on this subject on March 8th.

Vice-Chancellor Francisco Coy attended the meeting; Ambassador Murillo; Carlos Fernando García, director of Colombian Immigration, and representatives of different subordinate units of the National Police, Office of the Attorney General of the Nation, Civil Aviation and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As reported by the State Department, the meeting reviewed the requirements of the admissions program according to five pillars set by the United States government: Counter Terrorism, Law Enforcement, Traveler Screening, Immigration Law and Travel/ID Documents.

“The above is in order to identify steps, both within the country and with the US authorities, that will allow our citizens to travel to the United States for tourism or business purposes in the future without a visa,” they ensured.

According to the United States Office of Consular Affairs, to enter the visa waiver program you need:

– Good exchange of law enforcement and security data with the United States.
– Issuance of electronic passports.
– Visitor (B) visa refusal rate to be less than three percent.
– Timely reporting of lost and stolen passports, both blank and issued.
– Maintaining high standards in counter-terrorism, law enforcement, border control and document security.

“Compliance with this does not guarantee that a country will receive the designation. It is at the discretion of the United States Government,” they explain.
