The 5.9 magnitude earthquake alarmed hundreds of citizens this morning before the ground started to move. This was due to a warning issued by Google that said: “quake soon, light shaking expected, estimated initial magnitude about 5.8 degrees”.

Immediately, many people managed to evacuate their homes and waited for the emergency alarm to go off in their buildings. But, The National Geological Service (SGN) says it’s not possible to predict an earthquake before it happens.

According to John Makario Londoño, director of Geothreats at SGN, what the Google system does is, warns that a more severe seismic wave is on the way and therefore an earthquake will be felt after the alarm sounds.

But the expert says the warning is given when traveling from the source of the seismic wave until it reaches the earth, but he explains that this event happens within seconds.

On the other hand, experts say that Google uses the ‘ShakeAlert’ system, which consists of a network. 1,675 seismic sensors They are used to detect tremors and earthquakes.
