“I didn’t raise him,” President Gustavo Petro told “Cambio Magazine” when asked about his firstborn son, Nicolás, who was involved in a scandal for asking former drug traffickers for money to finance his father’s campaign. Excuse me, Mr. President? Are you saying it’s all my mom’s fault? Or that you are always an incomplete father and therefore have no responsibility for the formation of Nicolás?

Is this how you avoid the scandal that has tarnished the honor and reputation of one of your family members today? Do you mind if you say he’s just a biological son and nothing more? Is this how you justify your actions? Are you ignoring this? Are you in denial of your eldest son, who was accused of taking 600 million pesos from Samuel Santander Lopesierra, convicted of drug trafficking in the United States, and 400 million from “Turco” Hilsaca, who was also accused of drug trafficking-related crimes?

Aren’t you ashamed of the message you send to your parents in the rest of the country? Is it best to abandon the children as children in case a scoundrel comes along? That children are turned away at the most difficult times? Didn’t the biblical Jesus Christ, with his prodigal son morality, teach the opposite?

How far can you go to save your own skin? Are you putting all the responsibility for Nicolás’ education on his mother alone? Didn’t you have candles at that funeral? And now you’re blaming your mother, who had to absolutely undertake the raising of her son alone and act like a single mother? Is this how you thank him for giving and raising a son? Blaming him for everything?

She burned her eyelashes, treated her fever, fed her, controlled the housework, trained her, and she certainly did her best as you left her to her upbringing and pursued power and fame. Because you only served 16 months in Modelo prison in Bogotá and the rest of the time?
