LinkedIn has announced that it will shut down its last app in China, InCareer, as of August 9, 2023, after its owner. The American Microsoft said that there is fierce competition and a difficult macroeconomic climate in this country..
The company will decisively lay off 716 people and was one of the few US companies that managed to build a social network in China despite censorship and strict local regulations.
Microsoft has launched a specific version of its professional network in the Asian country through a local joint venture following ruthless rules. In 2021, the company said LinkedIn was unavailable in mainland China, so it replaced it with a simplified local version called InCareer.
This practice allowed local professionals to find and apply for jobs and remain connected to their networks, but “after careful consideration, we have made the decision to shut down InCareer effective August 9, 2023,” he said.
Despite initial progress, “InCareer has faced fierce competition and a tough macroeconomic environment, which ultimately led us to make the decision to suspend service in China,” the company said.
The company’s CEO, Ryan Roslansky, pointed out that 716 jobs were eliminated.
Due to strict local laws and not always clear rules, most US multinational internet companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or YouTube are blocked in China.
