One of the announcements that I’ve been waiting for since 2020 has been confirmed. Willow, one of the mythical characters from the hand of George Lucas, will have a series on Disney+. This was confirmed during Star Wars Celebration 2022 with the first teaser trailer of the series, which will be released on November 30 this year.

John M. Chu (GI Joe: Revenge, New York Neighborhood, Crazy Rich Asians) will direct and produce, and will also feature showrunners Jonathan Kasdan (Solo) and Wendy Mericle (Arrow).

One of the biggest doubts that hovered around the premiere of a series like Willow pointed to How would I meet the passage of years?. After all, the original film dates from the late 1980s, and the new Disney+ series is framed as a continuation of the original. In fact, and despite the fact that the production adds new characters to the universe of the story, one of its greatest milestones is that the main character is still the same. Warwick Davis will once again become the embodiment of the eternal Willow. A fact that, without a doubt, guarantees the success of a series created by and for the nostalgic.

original movie about Willow dates back to 1988. Directed by Ron Howard, it was a story based on an idea by George Lucas, who at the time was focused on the Star Wars universe itself. In the original film, Willow Oofgoods protects baby Elora Danan from the evil Queen. Through a prophecy that makes him the hero of the story.

Conceived from the novels Lord of the Rings, the film was not a big hit with critics at the time. The fantastic universe, invented by Gorge Lucas, was left halfway. With a small budget, most of the scenes and special effects were eventually cut. Against all odds, Warwick’s performance and what little that could be saved from the special effects were the few that could be saved from the film. Despite everything, and although the critics were not on his side, Willow knew how to win over fans. Overall, the film was the culmination of the fantasy genre of the time, which still exists today. So much so that Disney reopens the nostalgia box and points to a new series on its streaming platform.

In addition, the series has always been associated with Star Wars. Similarities between one and the other have always been on the table. After all, George Lucas was the executive arm of both. The concept of the characters, the choice and recording of the scenes, the actors themselves and the illustrations have a lot of similarities.

As for the plot of the new series, little that is known is concentrated in the new trailer that has just been released. A young princess gathers a group of adventurers to save her twin brother, a plot similar in scope to the original film. Along the way, a whole list of fantastical creatures, magic, the path between good and evil, and, of course, Willow.
