IN PenguinGotham has been attacked by the Riddler (Paul Dano) and is in chaos. Not only that, but underworld leader Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) has been killed. This sets up a direct confrontation between various criminal factions seeking to take their place. The most determined to achieve this goal is Oz (Colin Farrell), who will also have to try to avoid being killed by the surviving members of the Falcone clan. And this while all the other violent forces in the city are organizing against him.
It’s a complex scenario that takes Oz and the rest of the characters out into the streets and into a realistic landscape that’s very different from how Batman and his world have been portrayed so far. While Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, which hit theaters between 2005 and 2012, was a success, the city ultimately became a contested territory for evil. In fact, some of the films’ most memorable dialogue refers to the “contest” of Gotham’s soul. What makes the dark metropolis an emblem of ethics and morality.
But for Matt Reeves, Batman’s underworld is about the tangled nexus of organized crime. Hence the premise, which directly translates to Penguin— are more like stories about how the mafia works. The HBO series takes that perspective and delves into fear, cruelty, and greed using a clever combination of factors. On one end, there’s a modern idea of evil. On the other end, a view of villains that makes them seem more like evil power strategists than nuanced figures. What does this give? PenguinThis is the quality of the harsh gray territory.

A New Look at the DC World

While this isn’t connected to the main trunk of the future DC Universe, it does allow us to show how context is connected to Batman . The film, which is hoped to release a second installment in 2025, delves into the life of a much younger and inexperienced Batman as he searches for his destiny. But on the other hand, and also in the criminal world, about which he knows little and which he has to deal with a certain inexperience and clumsiness.
In fact, the film is about how Batman (Robert Pattinson) still goes out on the streets to confront criminals without really knowing why he does it. This leads him to engage in street fights and become a dark creature, nameless and more known for his brutal actions than his heroism. At this point, Gotham is corrupt, broken and far from redemption, but despite this, Bruce Wayne still tries to bring justice in the only way he sees fit. That is, through cruelty and a wild need for justification.
In this scenario, Carmine Falcone is in control. So much so that it can be assumed that there is a thread of connection between Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s father, and the criminal organization he leads. A theme that is rarely touched upon, but marks the path that Penguinis on a much larger, more sinister level. In Gotham, no one is immune to moral corrosion. And in fact, the series raises very similar ideas to Matt Reeves’ film. Who is really good or bad among the temptations of crime?
The Importance of Heroes and Villains in Penguin

The above directly affects the idea that evil and good in Penguinrather than the extremes that are easily discernible. In fact, the show spends time and effort showing that Oz, despite his criminal past and ambitions to become a Gotham gang leader, is also capable of good deeds. This perspective makes the series richer and more nuanced. At the same time, it is much less close into the innocent language of comics about how ethical questions should be explored.
Exactly the same thing happens in Batman V Penguin No one is completely bad or ethical. And it is this sense that Gotham’s crime reaches into uncharted territory that makes the world Reeves presents so important to understanding the series. The same city that is home to a masked vigilante whose only moral rule is a vague notion that it is wrong to kill is also the city that gives power Oz to destroy his enemies.
An interesting point to keep in mind is that Gotham, which represents Penguinexactly the same as Batman. Namely, the mayoral election that just took place and surviving the attack of the Riddler. Thus, he is partially covered in water as a result of a disaster from which he has never recovered. This creates the political and social conditions for Oz to act. In addition, so that the Falcone family can begin to fight back as best they can and in a desperate maneuver, new contenders for the title of Lord of Crime of the city.
