The study, published in the journal Management Science, looked at the ability of participants in the TV show “Golden Balls” to detect lies. While humans have a harder time spotting deception, algorithms are much better at it.
According to the study, algorithms correctly predicted participants’ behavior in 74% of cases, while humans were only 51-53% accurate. In one experiment, participants who saw an algorithm warning about possible deception before watching a video were better at detecting lies.
The authors of the study emphasize that providing algorithmic alerts early could significantly increase the effectiveness of combating misinformation on online platforms.
