Variety released the trailer for Father Piothe feature film of Abel Ferrara starring Shia LaBeoufu who plays the role of the Italian mystic and saint who lived in Puglia between the end of the nineteenth century and the middle of the twentieth century.

Abel Ferrara said of Padre Pio:
It is an iconic figure. It is also present on trucks, and we are talking about the saint most revered by drug dealers in Naples. He can be considered a second Jesus. Shia LaBeouf is the ideal person for this role, as he is the type of actor who suddenly gets into a motor home and decides to move to a convent in California.
The production of the feature film about Padre Pio was entrusted to Diana Phillips, Philipp Kreuzer, Maurizio Antonini and Cristian Mercuri of Capstone. The film will be screened during the Venice Film Festival. Speaking to Ansa, Abel Ferrara himself said of Padre Pio:
I have always been fascinated by its humanity, its simplicity. Actually he was a monk, indeed, if you asked him who he was, he wanted to say that he was just a simple monk and also poorly educated, which is not really true. I loved his inner struggle then, this struggle of his that didn’t stop him from carrying out his mission of building hospitals.
