Microsoft want to make Names of Windows updates something catchier. The next package would be called 22H2, but according to a tipster, the name may have been changed to Windows 11 2022. We’re still a long way from the simplicity of other operating systems, but that’s a start.
The novelty was discovered by tipster XenoPanther, who allegedly found it in a reference in the Windows 11 Getting Started menu, which is the interface that appears when you initialize a new computer.
It is not clear whether in turn Windows 11 2022 is a simple placeholder, waiting for something more compelling. Microsoft has changed its approach time and again: we’ve moved from month-name-based updates – such as the Windows 10 May Update ‘to the most recent Windows 10 21H2.
Microsoft had previously considered taking a more intriguing approach: it wanted to use the animals’ name to make its updates even more recognizable. Nothing came of it. Another hypothesis that was evaluated involved the use of people’s proper names. But this one, too, was eventually thrown away.
It seems that Microsoft now wants to focus on less frequent updates that are released from semester to semester, so as not to fragment the new features into dozens of different micro-updates. The decision to use more recognizable names for updates would be consistent with this direction.
