Trieste Science + Fiction Festivalthe most important Italian event dedicated to science fiction, scheduled from November 1 to 6, 2022 in the Julian capital at the Politeama Rossetti, the Miela Theater and the DoubleTree by Hilton Trieste, announces five unmissable documentaries that will be presented during the 22nd edition: works by great news that tells the mysteries of the glaciers, the secrets of carbon and the consequences of climate change, as well as the famous Voyager space mission and the great genre film.
In the documentary “In the ice(Denmark/Germany, 2022), which will be presented as part of the Mondofuturo Talks, the cycle of encounters between science and science fiction that will take place live at the DoubleTree by Hilton Trieste with documentary screenings in the afternoon at the Miela Theater , Director Lars Ostenfeld accompanies three of the world’s foremost glaciologists on a scientific expedition to the remnants of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Dorthe Dahl-Jensen, Jason Box and Alun Hubbard work to collect data that can help us answer the most important questions of our time to answer: How fast is the ice melting? How fast is sea level rising? How much time do we have left to confront the effects of climate change that is disrupting the planet? Spectacular images document scientists’ perilous descent into the impressive ice caves, where the roar of the melting water is interrupted by the constant roar of the ice breaking free from the walls and collapsing. A scenario that in not many years could remain visible only in these images that document it.
An Italian preview will also be presented as part of the Mondofuturo meetings “It’s quieter at dusk(United States, 2022) by Billy Miossi, who follows a select group of senior engineers who have devoted their lives to conducting the longest and most far-reaching mission in NASA history, Voyager. Today they are far from the lights of the spotlight, but this strange team of brilliant engineers, with their Voyager probes, has conquered the concept of discovery and travels among the stars propelled only by a dim sunlight. As the world has moved on to more advanced spacecraft and flashy leaders, the celestial journey of obsolete probes transcends Earth’s boundaries. An exciting tribute to the team behind the mission that has gone the furthest in human history.
Again for Mondofuturo the documentary “Carbon – The Unauthorized Biography(Canada/Germany/Australia, 2022) by Daniella Ortega and Niobe Thompson, telling the secrets of carbon. Through spectacular and unexpectedly unusual images, the documentary reveals the paradoxical story of the element at the origin of life, but also its possible end. Told in first person by the star of the TV series “Succession”, Sarah Snook, Carbon tells of his origins in the heady core of an exploded star and the turbulent saga between the fibers of our ever-changing planet. With contributions from renowned scientists, stunning animation and fantastic orchestral music, this documentary reminds us that we are part of the most extraordinary history in the universe.
In the Classix section of the Trieste Science + Fiction Festival, dedicated to the great classics of science fiction, an Italian preview is presented “Orchestra of Storms”(England, 2022) by Dima Ballin and Kat Ellinger, documentary dedicated to the life and work of cult director Jean Rollin. Friends, critics and actors who worked with him tell us all about that tormented artist with an unconventional background, creator of an innovative fantastic surrealism that shines in original and unmistakable films such as Le viol du vampire, La rose de fer, Fascination, Lèvres de Singing and Living Death. Sex and nudity, innocence and perversion, amazing aesthetics and breaking the rules became Rollin’s signature style.
Once again for the Classix section will be there “The dark side of society”(United States, 2022) by Larry Wade Carrell, who will be presented in the world premiere at the Trieste event. The documentary chronicles the origins of Brian Yuzna’s film “Society,” an absolute cult of 1980s fantasy horror cinema. Fierce metaphor in splatter sauce about the snobbish American bourgeoisie, “Society” represents Yuzna’s fulminant directorial debut, as well as one of the best social political horror of the time. Carrell’s documentary reveals the background to the film’s origins and original screenplay, revealing the secrets of a multi-censored film that has marked the history of genre cinema.
