Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness contains one of the creepiest scenes in Marvel’s long filmography. In it, Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, shows the true extent of her power. And that includes stopping an entire team of superheroes in the most vicious and brutal way imaginable. We are, of course, referring to the already iconic scene in the Illuminati room in which Wanda faces the heroes of an alternate universe. A brutal confrontation that ends with a very tough scene that surprised even Sam Raimi himself. Which is surprising, given that he is the one who changed the horror genre with several films in his filmography.

Sam Raimi’s film was a box office hit and one of the year’s biggest releases. The film managed to successfully incorporate elements of horror films and bring out the darkest characters. As if that wasn’t enough, it drastically changed the overall tone of the Marvel movies. One highlight is that the studio allowed Sam Raimi to bring much of his visual flair to the film.

But Raimi’s famous aesthetic wasn’t the only thing the director was able to bring to the film. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness he focuses more on the inner darkness of his characters. As much as daring to show unknown spaces and places in the Marvel franchise. Not only did Raimi dare to experiment with a character closer than a terrible monster than a traditional villain. In addition, he populated the Marvel Universe with zombies and corpses. But the most amazing thing was how he managed to show the power of Wanda in the face of the heroes of an alternate reality. The character not only surpasses them in strength, but also kills each of them with frightening cruelty. For most of the public, this came as an unexpected surprise. And for Sam Raimi too.

In an interview for individual, screenwriter Michael Waldron commented on the process of creating a scene of violence Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And he went into detail that even Raimi was amazed at the level of violence and ferocity of the scene. After all, up to this point, Marvel has made sure that its products meet a certain standard. And that included as little violence and gore as possible. But for the Doctor Strange sequel, the studio allowed its team to innovate, which, of course, produced idiosyncratic results.

“I wrote terrible deaths because Sam Raimi was the director and I surprised Sam. He commented, “Can we do this?” and I said, “You can. Because it’s you, I think we can.” I felt a lot of freedom to go crazy in this movie because I was Sam and because I know what he’s so good at and he’s really good at it. I have just given you the main components and some details of how they work, [pero] It came straight from his twisted mind.”

And the result puzzled and fascinated fans in equal measure. From an incoming zombie layer of cursed souls to the nightmarish witch coming out of the shadows. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Raimi is an allegory of horror that stands out from the Marvel filmography and surprises with its possibilities. A real step in a new direction that most of the public and fans of Raimi are grateful for.
