Last night around 18:00, the Transmilenio shuttle bus traveling on Carrera 30 and Calle 79 overturned while carrying approximately 80 passengers. According to the statement made by the Ministry of Health, 2 medical ambulances and 7 basic transportation ambulances had to go to the scene. Injured and trapped persons were reported and therefore an external manager from the District Health Secretariat (SDS) was sent to the scene to inform risk management and mobilize the hospital network.
With the arrival of emergency teams, the injured were slowly taken out of the double-articulated vehicle and within a few minutes, there was no one left inside. In total, approximately 49 people were evaluated.
Of these, 46 were transferred to Alcalá clinics, Nueva clinic, San José Infantil hospital, El Country clinic, Reina Sofia clinic, Santa Fe foundation, workers’ clinic and Jab Salud.
TransMilenio’s technical safety manager expressed regret over the rollover of the bus located at NQS 79th Street and said: “The facts are currently subject to review by the company. Once the possibility was known, all emergency protocols were activated. “All institutions intervened immediately.”
Hypotheses to be evaluated include the speed at which the bus moves, the number of people it carries, and whether rain affects the bus’s trajectory. These and other factors will be taken into account. At the end of the emergency, the bus had to be fixed with the help of a crane and the road corridor had to be reopened.
Bogotá mayor Claudia López was grateful that there were no fatalities in the crash and that all passengers were not in danger.
According to experts, there are various factors that may cause the turnover to occur, and ultimately these will need to be evaluated in this case. It can occur due to careless driving and excessive speed, lack of knowledge about the structure of the vehicle, or even carrying too heavy a load. This type of accident can also be caused by a situation where the driver suddenly finds himself on the road, for example, when a person suddenly crosses the road or avoids something such as a gap or a bump. Ultimately, all these issues will be the subject of the research.
