“VPN is not a panacea. The state, Google and YouTube have slowed down the process, making quality worse, but in the short term this has no effect, unlike, for example, if access to YouTube were completely closed, then people would be forced to move to other platforms to watch and download videos,” says Geller.

According to him, Russians still use the banned Instagram*, even though it has become less convenient. He notes that some tools have been lost, but “so far people are patient.” Geller believes that the complete abandonment of YouTube in Russia “can be forgotten.”

The development of Russian platforms in terms of content may have a special impact on what is happening, because from a technical point of view everything is fine, but it is too early to say whether it is as full as on YouTube. Geller noted that these changes will occur in about a year; he expects a strong swing in favor of Russian video services, but the Russians will not abandon YouTube completely.

We previously wrote that 77% of Internet users in Russia reacted negatively to the slowdown of YouTube.
