Valve’s latest VR headset was the 2019 Valve Index, powerful and expensive like few others. Since then, there have been rumors that the company is working on another VR device. they point to a new standalone helmet codenamed Deckard.
The company’s recently published patent application may show the device in the making. Of course, the usual caveats apply: patents are patents, not product roadmaps.
And the language used in this type of query is intentionally so broad that it’s hard to read carefully. If you want to see something specific and cool, here’s our analysis of the Steam deck.
Here we have images first published by The Verge. It’s probably unwise to think of these images as a draft of Deckard’s helmet.
In fact, most of the writing of the patent relates (a few details) to the head strap of the device and how users can precisely tighten and loosen it to achieve an optimal fit.
If you feel like thinking a little, you could compare this focus on customization to complaints that the Index was notably unwieldyBut the preference for comfort is no surprise for a VR headset.
Perhaps more notable is the latest round of data leaks on Deckard, pulled from the official code by Brad Lynch, a YouTuber who diligently follows Deckard’s development.
In a recent YouTube video, Lynch pulled a number of development tools coded for Deckard and similar from the latest SteamVR beta, suggesting that Valve is on track to build this new headset.
And with the recent release of Steam Deck proving that Valve can continue to surprise, we can expect the next big release from Gabe Newell’s company.
