If you are one of those who walk or cross the street without taking your eyes off your mobile phone, you should be more careful. You may be risking your life by answering messages, calls, surfing social networks or work applications that are difficult to disconnect.

A woman in Pereira who fears being ‘glued’ to her phone can be proof of that while passing through a shopping mall.

According to footage taken from security cameras, the citizen exited one of the buildings and managed to take more than ten steps before tripping. He had not realized that in front of him was a pool that could be identified with a swimming pool, accompanied by vegetation as part of the decoration of the space.

He seemed so focused on the device that he didn’t look up for a few seconds to realize where he was going. It was as if he acted by inertia. He stumbled, however, and managed to ‘find’ the area and realized that the water was now reaching his knees.

Fortunately, he knew how to restrain himself so as not to fall completely into the water and, above all, to look after his personal belongings, including his cell phone. Likewise, he immediately got help from two people and the security guard who approached him. He had no wounds; I was just soaked from the stalemate from feet to knees.

The images were broadcast on networks and local media to highlight the dangers of focusing on technological devices. This warning message was echoed by several Internet users: “It doesn’t make me laugh, but you see a lot of people outside who are distracted by their cell phones and don’t even look where they’re going. I hope he learns his lesson”, “The worst virus in human history”, “Rest your mobile phone for a moment, it causes many accidents, addicts do not learn”.

But other people questioned the sign in the mall: “The safety of the place for visitors should come before its architecture and how beautiful it can be seen. Whether you look at your cell phone or not, it does not justify you being without a railing”, “The location of that water source that I saw wrong, I am not an engineer, but at first glance it seems that a barrier should be put in front of these events”.

Considering that many people around the world walk while looking at their cell phones, Google has a choice so that distractions are not the cause of accidents.. It is available on devices with Android operating system and you must follow the steps below to activate it:

1. Go to ‘Settings’ or ‘Configuration’.

2. Search for the “Digital Wellbeing” section. ‘Look ahead’ or ‘Attention’ will appear between one of its functions.

3. Read the features they offer you: “If you use your phone while walking, you’ll get a reminder to focus on your surroundings. Use this function with care. Attention does not replace the fact of being mindful.

4. To be more precise, enable GPS. Also indicate whether you will be physically active or just walking.

When the function is enabled, The mobile phone will detect that you are moving in a vacuum and will constantly send notifications to the screen so that you look up and do not forget about the outside.

Of course, remember that this does not replace the responsibility you have. You should always disconnect and be aware of what is going on around you.
