“I don’t understand what’s wrong,” said one driver when he saw one of his colleagues moving on the ground and insistently asking for help. It was Milton Mejía, 35, who parked a truck carrying vehicles known as ‘nanny’ in an area of Barrancabermeja. He had left Bogota hours before; I had planned to take a car from the municipality of Magdalena Medio and continue to Cartagena.
Mejía came to the parking lot normally, but suddenly she took off some of her clothes and looked like she was dying. First, Other drivers prayed because of the suspicion created by his attitude; they believed it was a curse or some form of witchcraft.
His wife, Carolina Escobar, had spoken to him via video call 20 minutes before the fatal outcome. “He was excited. I realized he was scared. He just asked me where I was. I told him I was at home. He let him show up a little bit and the conversation was cut off. I called him back but he didn’t answer me,” she told EL TIEMPO.
The cell phone rang again. This time, it wasn’t Milton, but another freight forwarder trying to give his relatives the news of his death on Saturday, February 11. “He was on the ground with no vital signs. There was no ambulance,” Escobar remembered. He traveled from Bogotá, where he lived with Mejía, a heavy-duty hauler who had been traveling on country roads for over a decade.

During his time in Barrancabermeja, he could not find definitive answers. The family does not explain what will happen to him as he has no health history. The first police report states that he will have a heart attack, but Escobar is trying to find out what caused it: “It is unknown whether it was scopolamine.. This is what we want to know. That’s weird because I’ve never seen him in that state. It’s a very difficult thing to understand.”
The cabin of the cargo truck was a mess, and the man had his wallet and related documents, but no money.

Thanks to seven million pesos collected among the transporters’ union, his wife was able to transport the body to Bogotá on February 14 for the funeral.
It now calls for agility in the investigations of the Barrancabermeja Prosecutor’s Office. “The case remained in the city and I live in Bogotá. Understanding the process will be difficult. We’re waiting for the autopsy result to find out what it is, whether it’s scopolamine, whether they hurt him because they told me he was hit in the head. They didn’t tell us more,” he said.
