Russia has received smartphones, watches, TVs and set-top boxes that are infected with viruses out of the box, writes Izvestia, Trend Micro’s original report.
Devices were infected at the production stage. Uploaded viruses are available for surveillance by users and covertly collect data.
How exactly the viruses penetrated the firmware is unknown. Obviously, the server of one of the software companies was hacked, and then the virus code was merged into the firmware network.
Russia ranked fifth in the supply of infected gadgets. Most (55%) of the devices were sold in Asian countries.
Trend Micro hasn’t detected any brands, models, viruses, or firmware, so it’s impossible to say exactly why this situation was serious.
