oppenheimer It opens in Brazilian cinemas on July 20. According to director Christopher Nolan, the film is about the theoretical physicist and creator of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer. Should be seen as a “story of responsibility” for Silicon Valley.

After a special session for scientists and the press, the producer was asked what the message of the film would be for Silicon Valley. “I wish they understood the concept of responsibility,” Nolan replied. Also, the director showed some concerns about the creation of artificial intelligence (AI).

“When you innovate through technology, you need to make sure there is responsibility,” Nolan continued. It refers to the technological diversity backed by the great techies of Silicon Valley.

Christopher Nolan reports that tech companies have seen tremendous growth over the past 15 years using terms like “algorithms”. But they don’t know the meaning of “in any mathematical sense” and moreover, they don’t want to take responsibility for their impact on society.

“Is this true for AI? This is a terrible possibility. After all, AI systems will be loaded with nuclear weapons as they enter the defense infrastructure, and if we allow people to say that it is a separate entity from the administration, programming and use of AI, then we are doomed.” commented the manager.

It’s crucial for Nolan to hold people – and Silicon Valley’s big tech – accountable for “what they do with the tools they have.”. So, the filmmaker sees this oppenheimer “it should at least serve as a responsibility story”.

AI and the Oppenheimer Moment

At the meeting after Oppenheimer’s screening, Nolan also said that he met with leading researchers in the field of artificial intelligence. Later, professionals call the rise of technology the “Oppenheimer Moment”.

“Researchers look to Oppenheimer’s story to tell us what are the responsibilities of scientists developing new technologies that can have unintended consequences,” says the filmmaker.

It is worth noting that J. Robert Oppenheimer learned about the attack on Hiroshima in 1945 through the press as well as the public. After the historical event, the theoretical physicist deeply regretted the creation of the atomic bomb and fought against the development of more powerful military weapons.
