This OH MY GOD finally revealed more details about AM5 socket and Ryzen 7000 during the presentation Computex 2022. As usual, socket changes always raise lots of doubts and this time was no different. The big question is: Will Ryzen 7000 work on motherboards with AM4 sockets?
Going for the simplest answer: no it won’t work. The detailed answer is divided into two main questions: size and pinout new processors that follow a different model from the very popular AM4.
AM5 has bigger size
While the dimensions of AM4 socket processors are 40 x 40 mm, socket AM5 extends this format. 45x45mm. So there’s no point in trying, because it’s just The CPU will not fit the AM4 motherboard. Likewise, an AM4 processor is not properly sized to run on an AM5 motherboard.
pinout is very different
The other factor ending compatibility between Ryzen 7000 chips and AM4 cards is the adoption of the standard. LGA 1718. LGA is short for Land Grid Array; this simply means that the connecting pins between the processor and the motherboard are located directly on the motherboard. There are only holes in the processor.
Until the AM4 socket, AMD used the PGA format, or Pin Grid Array, where the pins were on the processor and the socket was on the motherboard. To make it easier to understand, think of one as the opposite of the other.
So, plugging a Ryzen 7000 into an AM4 platform means that the connection won’t be made as neither of them have pins. Similarly, putting an AM4 processor on the Ryzen 7000 platform also creates no connection as both have pins.
The rule is clear: Ryzen 7000 will only work with AM5 platforms. So if you’re looking to go straight to next-gen AMD, it’s good to have some extra cash to invest in a new motherboard.
The first Ryzen 7000 CPUs, codenamed Raphael, were released between September and November this year.
