A team of Australian scientists conducted a “prospective meta-analysis” to understand how competition affects a person’s expression of personal qualities. All studies reviewed by experts were recorded before they were performed. In total, the experts analyzed 45 different experiments in which more than 18,123 participants were tracked.
Meta-analysis has generally found that competition has a negative impact on morality. But this effect is very small. Specifically, the value was only 0.1 (Cohen’s d = -0.1). It also turned out that not only were the losers more honest (d = -0.34) during the guessing contest and there was no change in the behavior of the winners.
So competition for honesty and morality doesn’t affect much on average. Experts came to this conclusion.
