A new study from researchers at the University of Pittsburgh has just found that AI can now create poetry that readers not only have difficulty distinguishing from texts written by humans, but even prefer the works of legendary poets such as Shakespeare and Dickinson.
In experiments with more than 1,600 participants, readers were able to recognize AI-generated poetry and human-written poetry only 46.6% of the time.

AI created poetry They also consistently scored higher on 13 different quality measures, including pace, beauty and emotional impact.
Five of the poems rated “least” were written by famous poets, while four poems rated “most human” were created by artificial intelligence.
When participants were explicitly told that the poems were created by artificial intelligence, they rated them lower, regardless of their authorship.
This study may upset some in the literary community; However, this is a clear sign that the distinction between artificial intelligence and human writing is becoming impossible, even in creative fields such as poetry. Complex questions will soon arise as artificial intelligence begins to surpass humans in surprising aspects of culture.
