Russian archaeologists have found artifacts dating back to the 10th century at the bottom of the Volkhov in Veliky Novgorod.
The studies were carried out in May 2023. The scientists began by going through a strong “sterile layer” that had accumulated over the remnants of the Great Bridge. There is no runoff or muddy water that makes detecting small objects difficult, but the depth of the excavation is already more than two meters. Archaeologists managed to find a dirham – a silver coin of the Arab Caliphate, a weight of the 10th century and a fibula – a clasp for clothes, which also served as an ornament.
The most valuable artifacts found at the bottom of the Volkhov will be exhibited in the Great Bridge Museum. It refers to a series of bridges that existed in Novgorod from the 12th century to 1944 and run across the Volkhov, the city’s most important public spaces, place of commerce, public meetings and executions.
