Fake accounts have become a new tool for scammers trying to scam Russians. Previously, such schemes were used in social networks, but now scammers have transferred their actions to instant messengers, where they create fake profiles of acquaintances and close people. VTB customers report that scammers are contacting friends and colleagues under their own name and with photos, asking for debt or living in “emergency situations.”

Nikita Chugunov, senior vice president of the bank and head of the digital business department, emphasized that the attackers hacked their social media accounts to ask for money. This year, the activity of scammers in messengers has increased by 12 percent. Cybersecurity experts warn that greater caution should be exercised when communicating on instant messengers and checking for suspicious aid or financial requests.
