The authorities do not plan to finance the development of computer games, said Maxim Parshin, deputy head of the Ministry of Digital Development.
According to him, there are exceptions, for example, projects with simulators, in which it makes sense to direct public investment. But in general, the game development market in Russia should not be owned by the state, Parshin believes.
“We start from the fact that there is money in the market, there are projects, there are developers. That is, there is everything so that the projects are developed not at the expense of state investments, ”said the Deputy Minister, his words are quoted by Interfax.
He explained that the department sees the gaming industry as part of the general trend of import substitution in IT. Competence centers for the development of industrial / system-wide software were created in Russia, and a center for game services was launched on the basis of the latter.
As part of this work, it was possible to build a “landscape” that shows the gray areas of the market. According to Parshin, today there are not many such zones. In less than 10% of cases, the internal market cannot offer an alternative to individual solutions.
At the same time, the authorities still provided support to the industry.
“For example, the budget assumed compensation for the project rate on a bank loan in the amount of 400 million rubles provided to one of the game developers for a specific project, the release of which is scheduled for next year,” he said. the deputy director of the Ministry of Digital Development specified.
According to Alexey Goreslavsky, executive director of the Internet Development Institute, over the past year 960 million rubles have been invested in game development through the Institute.
Now that VK is developing the Russian game engine, the company has estimated its own investments in the project at 1 billion rubles. The product is scheduled to be introduced in 2025. In May, VK announced that the engine would be called the Nau Engine.
At the end of last year, the Russian authorities began discussing the federal project “Gaming Industry of the Future”, which involves the creation of a single developer and publisher by 2030. Up to $50 billion can be spent on the development of the project.
