They condemn Apple, Google, Amazon, Meta, ByteDance and Microsoft for not complying with DMA
Failure to comply with the Digital Markets Act could result in multimillion-dollar fines for these companies
The European Consumer Organisation has published a report. Accuses big tech companies of failing to comply with EU Digital Markets ActAmong these companies Apple, Google, Amazon, Meta, ByteDance and MicrosoftThis organisation defends consumer rights and advises European legislators.
Apple has already been singled out for supposedly not complying with DMA, which has forced the company to make some adjustments to its policies. This law is the one that allows for the opening of alternative app stores on the iPhone and the availability of NFC for third parties, among other changes.
Why isn’t Apple complying with the Digital Markets Act?
As for Apple, The European Consumer Organisation has highlighted several reasons why it believes the company has failed to comply with the DMAAlthough some issues have been resolved recently. Here are the highlights:
- Apple is taking unnecessary steps to prevent users from switching to alternative app stores or downloading apps outside of the App Store.
- Apple doesn’t make it easy for consumers to change their default settings.
- Apple’s browser selection screen doesn’t offer enough information, making it difficult for consumers to decide; moreover, it is “confusing, complicated, and causes negative friction.”
- Apple uses biased language to discourage users from opting for alternative payment services or subscribing to cheaper options outside of an app. This refers to the warnings it displays when consumers opt for alternative payment methods.
- Apple doesn’t allow users to easily uninstall first-party apps, and while Safari could be removed by the end of 2024, that option should have been available since March.
- Apple failed to submit adequate compliance reports to the European Commission and delayed implementation of some of the DMA’s measures, which amounts to a “clear breach” of the regulations.
Apple is determined to make significant changes
Apple has promised to make major changes to iOS in the coming months. It renders some of the report’s criticisms invalid:
- It will be possible to set calling, messaging, password managers, keyboards, navigation, translation and call spam filters as default applications.
- A new default apps section has been added to Settings, which resolves one of the complaints in the report about confusion when managing default browsers.
- Safari, App Store, Messages, Camera, and Photos apps can be deleted.
- The browser selection screen will include a description of the browser, the option to set it as the default, and the requirement to scroll down before deciding.
- When you choose a default browser other than Safari, that browser’s icon will replace the Safari icon on the Home screen or in the Dock.
These Major changes in iOS They will provide greater flexibility and app variety on the iPhone and will be available in the coming months.
