Experts from the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences are working to create an electromyostimulator for home use. Elena Tomilovskaya, head of the department of sensorimotor physiology and prevention at the institute, said that they plan to combine the best achievements of space medicine in this device.
According to Tomilovskaya, a prototype electromyostimulator that can be mass-produced is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024. This device will combine two types of stimulants used in space medicine. One of them is designed to train the strength and large muscles that help us move and lift weights. The other aims to work the muscles that support endurance and posture. The purpose of the new device is to combine these two training modes in one device.
The electromyostimulator is expected to be beneficial for the elderly and those unable to perform vigorous physical exercise. It can be particularly helpful for people with limited mobility due to isolation or injury. It can also be used for the rehabilitation of people who have had COVID-19 and are in conditions of limited physical activity.
Although a pacemaker cannot completely replace physical education and walking, it is a good alternative for people who cannot do active physical exercise. The device will be relatively light, weighing about 5 kg. Trials on unweighted humans are planned for 7 days to evaluate how electrical stimulation can prevent changes in muscles after prolonged inactivity.
This development is carried out within the framework of the Pavlovsk Center “Integrative Physiology – Medicine, High-Tech Health and Stress Resistance Technologies” (NCMU). The Institute for Biomedical Problems has been participating in the work of this center since 2020. The aim of NCMU is to develop advanced practical methods in the field of health. Within the framework of this center, a “Center for Research and Prevention of the Effects of Long-Term Isolation” was established on the basis of the Biomedical Problems Institute.
