There’s a new phone on Kickstarter, and it might be for you if you don’t need a big-screen device anymore. It’s the Unihertz Jelly Max, and it has a 5.05-inch screen, making it very small compared to phones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra And Apple iPhone 15 Pro MaxHowever, while the Jelly Max has a small screen, one of its other dimensions is far from tiny.
Unihertz is a well-established phone maker, best known for its rugged phones and unusual phones like the Titan, which has a physical keyboard underneath the screen. The Jelly Max is the latest in Unihertz’s line of small Jelly phones, and what makes it famous is that it supports 5G connectivity, making it one of the smallest phones available with the feature. However, just because the screen is small doesn’t mean the rest of the phone is small.
The Jelly Max has an unusual thickness of 16.3 mm, which belies its truly mini height of 128 mm and width of 62 mm. The design is simple, and the rounded body is a bit reminiscent of Motorola Moto G the original, only much thicker. We do like the transparent case, though. Interestingly, it’s not the battery that makes the Jelly Max bigger, which is a fairly standard 4,000 mAh battery. Instead, it’s likely to be a combination of that and a pretty impressive camera in a small frame by today’s standards.
The 100MP main camera will likely take up a bit of space inside the small phone, plus it is also joined by an 8MP telephoto camera that apparently has a 3.4x optical zoom feature. On the front is a 32MP selfie camera. The rest of the specs include a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone, and 66W fast charging. Software Android 14There is NFC for mobile payments and the phone has global support for the 5G range.
Unihertz has certainly created a phone that’s different from most of the other devices being sold by more established brands today, and if you don’t mind the considerable bulk of a small screen, you’ll have no problem trying it out. At the time of writing, the lowest bid for the Jelly Max on Kickstarter was $259. It’s expected to launch this October if you choose to back it, and the project has already exceeded its funding goal. However, keep in mind that Kickstarter campaigns are subject to delays and other changes. And while Unihertz has run several campaigns before this one, you should be aware that there may be changes once the phone launches.
