Meta will allow children aged 10 and over to enter the metaverse using Quest virtual reality headsets., with some restrictions. The change in the age limit, which will be valid until the end of the year, was announced last Friday (16).
Currently, the owner of Facebook only accepts users 13 years and older. However, as of the change that will apply to Quest 2 and Quest 3, Children aged 10, 11 and 12 will also have access to the platformusing accounts created and managed by parents through a specific interface.
As the tech giant explained, those responsible will be able to control the apps used by teenage children and prevent them from accessing inappropriate content. In contrast, Meta will only recommend programs that are considered age-safe and will not display ads.
Another detail is that children’s profiles and avatars will be set to private by default in Meta Quest. Thus, minor users can only be followed by other people with parental approval. However, the active status and current usage of the app will be hidden unless those responsible choose to share the information.
More tweaks available
Controlling tech usage time is something parents can do too, by scheduling the daily amount and breaks. They will also be able to enable content streaming to their mobile phones or televisions and monitor what their children see while using headphones.
There will also be the ability to determine whether children’s data will be used to improve the experience and delete accounts with all information. Already Meta Horizon Worlds will be restricted to ages 13 and up.
