Roscosmos member Energia said prototype testing of the Russian Vitacycle-T greenhouse for the International Space Station is scheduled to be completed by 2024.
The tests are conducted by the company’s “daughter” – the Command Instrumentation Research Institute – and the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences. RSC Energia stated that its results will determine the production schedule of flight samples and flight tests.
The Vitacycle-T experiment involves the creation of a greenhouse that allows growing plants on an industrial scale. According to Yury Smirnov, head of the Laboratory for the Development and Implementation of Medical and Biological Programs at the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it will be like a snail, where cosmonauts will periodically sow and harvest seed strips. It is planned to grow Chinese cabbage first.
