In fact, beavers build dams to protect themselves from predators. Especially from wolves and bears. The beavers themselves do not live in dams, but in a “house” created by these dams. Underwater entrances lead to this small chamber.

In the UK, beaver “houses” can be 10 m wide, and dams for this should be around 100 m long.

The world’s largest dam built by beavers is located in Alberta, Canada. Its length is 500 m.
