Vatican publishes ethics guide for artificial intelligence

Vatican decided to create its own code of ethics and principles to guide the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Alongside academics, legislators and those working in the field, the group is also interested in the development of technology.

The 140-page handbook was designed in a partnership between the Vatican Dicastery for Culture and Education and the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University (SCU). Together they founded the Institute for Technology, Ethics and Culture (ITEC).

“The Pope has always had a broad view of the world and humanity, and he believes technology is a good thing. But as we develop it, it’s time to ask deeper questions,” said St. Simon in Los Altos, in an interview Gizmodo.

The idea is to help people every step of the way from programming. “We tried to write in the language of business and engineering to make the choices really use and resemble things and patterns you’ve seen before,” said Ann Skeet, co-author of the book.

The Vatican handbook, which can be downloaded from the university’s website, has one anchoring principle, seven guiding principles, and 46 specification principles. Among these is the principle of “Dignity and respect for human rights”, which focuses on “confidentiality and confidentiality” and demands that no more data be collected than necessary.
