The Netflix streaming service has released a continuation of the representative series The Witcher with Henry Cavill in the title role.

The third season of the role was for the actor, in the future Geralt will go to Liam Hemsworth.

We have already reviewed the first 5 episodes. Let’s try to figure out why Cavill, honored by a big fan of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books and the CD Projekt RED games studio, left the project. What went wrong? Spoiler – absolutely everything.

A little background

What is the series about: The story follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter for hire who is trying to find his place among the most ferocious monsters – humans.

The first season, released in December 2021, left a double impression. The showrunners did a good job of restoring the production of Sapkowski’s books, inviting good martial arts directors and set designers, but completely failing the casting. As a result, many viewers were shocked (especially from black dryads).

I don’t want to remember the second season at all. It felt more like fanfiction than even a partial adaptation of the books. The scriptwriters simply trampled on the canons and foundations of the world.

Well, after the disastrous prequel The Witcher: Origin, which horrified many, fans waited with apprehension for the continuation of the original case. The prequel had more modern social vibes and black people than the vibes of The Witcher.

Almost everything is bad here, except for Cavill

I hasten to reassure, the third season is still more “The Witcher” than “Dom-2”. They still limp.

I won’t touch on the plot, it’s hard to do without spoilers. Apparently, history is extremely uneven in consciousness. One series can be events of rather melancholic journeys of heroes through picturesque landscapes, the other can throw several plot branches on the participants at once, the continuation of which is not so simple.

Sometimes you just fall asleepsometimes your brain frantically reminds you what the character is and what his motives are.

I advise you to at least watch with a brief view of the season, otherwise it will be simply difficult to watch the continuation. Especially if you know that everything here is already very sad and ridiculous.

The most obvious disadvantages of the third season: sometimes a ridiculous world and dialogues with manifestations, bad casting, uneven editing and incoherent storytelling.

Here are dialogues completely unadapted to Eastern medieval Europe. Everything is too modern. The more you watch and listen, the more it hurts your ears. And in general, the dialogues here are often arched and absolutely not like normal human conversations. The scriptwriters keep these two problems from the previous parts.

As before, there is an abrupt scene change, no sense of time or where the viewer is. The transitions have been so clumsilythat you stop understanding whether you are seeing a flashback or a direct continuation of a high scene. The only questions that occur at these moments are “What, in fact, is happening? Where I am?”.

However, the story eschews the confusion with the first season’s chronology in favor of something considerably simpler and more linear.

Movement on the surface here begins to resemble logistics in Diablo. As if the heroes just opened a portal and it happened in the right place. There is no sense of watching and watching travel when large spaces really rise up. After all, this is a whole continent, and not the Pskov province.

When it comes to probabilities, their motivations and actions, you begin to understand the pain of Henry Cavill. He’s always been blunt about wanting the showrunners to be true to the source material. But you need to understand that the absolute wild miscast makes possible the impossible.

It is hard to understand what was going on in the minds of people who selected actors for specific characters. But perhaps this most undesirable result from netflix. The case when the studio filmed The Lord of the Rings, Frodo would have been a dark-skinned transsexual, I am generally afraid to think about the fate of Sam.

A simple example. In The Witcher, elves are just people with big ears. Their mannerisms, behavior, politics and worldview are no different from people. It just looked stupid.

Buttercup has gone through a radical transformation. From a womanizer, the scriptwriters made a hero with very strange manners, which are forbidden to talk about on the territory of the Russian Federation. It is certainly clear that I was not joking at all about Frodo above.

An individual mention is possible one of the series, when the same events appear from different angles, thereby gradually covering the veil of mystery. But the problem is that the audience here repeats a ton of shots and dialogue. At some point, I even had to pause and check the money to see if I looked like an episode from the very beginning. Absolutely unsuccessful installation, which requires more subtle and carefully thought-out work.

Plus only one – action

Perhaps the only ones who really tried last year were Henry Cavill, choreographers and cameramen. There are some great fight scenes here that showcase Geralt’s distinctive sword fighting style.

It looks convincing and beautiful in its own way. There are juicy moments that you want to watch.

Conclusion: Henry did the right thing.

Whether the viewer chooses to watch the series for love of the novels or the video game, it won’t count as a feeling that The Witcher is missing something. Stories that take longer to unfold and generally show the need for more quality control from script to setup.

It seems that the showrunners have decided to prioritize the stylish picture and slow-mo scenes, rather than the exciting world of interest. There is no solid drama, adequate CGI and, most importantly, NORMAL casting.

I’m afraid to imagine what emotions fans of books experience. The characters here are mostly plastic, you just don’t believe in the chemistry of the characters here. On spectacular fights with various monsters you will not go far.

The first season of the franchise gave a glimmer of hope, the second took a step in the wrong understanding, and the third, perhaps, just stands still. Henry realized that it was pointless to drag such an unfinished world at his ends, and left. He is no longer Superman.
