Researchers analyzed data from nearly 200,000 women ages 15 to 49 in India, Pakistan and Nepal, The Guardian reported. Participants’ reports of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse between 2010 and 2018 were compared with temperature fluctuations over the same period. The results showed a 6.3 percent increase in domestic violence cases for every one degree increase in average annual temperature.
Specifically, a one degree increase in temperature in India was associated with an 8 percent increase in physical violence and a 7.3 percent increase in sexual violence.
The study highlights that this effect is more pronounced in low-income households and rural areas.
Experts suggest that the economic stress caused by the extreme heat contributes to increased aggression and exacerbates mental health problems.
