Farmers try to bring watermelons and melons to the shelves as early as possible, using a large amount of mineral fertilizers for this. But agronomist Vladimir Vikulov warns that because of this, too much nitrate can accumulate in these fruits. For this reason, he advises not to get caught by early watermelons and melons, especially those brought from abroad, for example Turkey.

The agronomist explains that some farmers use higher doses of mineral fertilizers to get an early harvest. However, this can cause nitrate buildup in melons. It is recommended to consume early watermelon and melon in small portions to avoid poisoning with nitric acid salts. Vladimir Vikulov advises to be in moderation when eating these fruits. He points out that other crops may also contain nitrates, but we don’t eat them as much as watermelons and melons. It is important to limit early consumption of watermelon and melon, especially to children and the elderly, to prevent possible poisoning.

Vladimir Vikulov recalls that the season of watermelons and melons in Russia usually begins at the end of July. This is when the fruit ripens naturally and contains less nitrates.
