Documents that were later deleted reported that in the 12 months ending June 2022, Azure’s revenue was roughly half that of its main competitor, Amazon Web Services (AWS). Azure’s revenue during this period was $34 billion compared to AWS’ $72 billion.
The discovery could change how investors view Microsoft’s cloud computing success. Unlike AWS and Google Cloud, Microsoft previously refused to disclose Azure’s actual revenue and reported it under its Intelligent Cloud segment. Analysts then urged Microsoft to be more transparent to address concerns and properly assess Azure’s profitability. In the end, the regulators did it by accident.
