However, insects also need to be fed and are currently mostly fed leftover chicken feed. New food sources are needed to expand insect-based meat production. Niels Eriksen, a biochemist at Aalborg University, proposes using brewery waste as food for insects. As billions of liters of beer are consumed worldwide each year, the wastewater generated during the brewing process contains discarded barley and yeast, which are rich in protein.
During the study, fly larvae were fed brewery waste and chicken feed, which showed comparable growth and nutritional value. This study suggests that other protein-rich waste products such as bone meal and fermentation industry by-products can also be used to feed insects. However, it is not yet clear whether consumers will accept the insect-based beef.
