Lack of sleep can make it difficult for you to do your daily activities. Over time, this can lead to loss of strength. Not getting enough sleep can also increase your odds of gaining weight, says Georgia Chilton, Senior Nutrition Manager, Fresh Fitness Food.
We need sleep so that the body can recover from daily work and the heart and cardiovascular system can relax. If you wake up tired and sleepy, you are unlikely to hit the gym that day.
Additionally, poor sleep has been associated with weight gain. Experts believe that the amount of sleep per night can affect body weight and metabolism.
A study of U.S. adults ages 30 to 60 found that people who sleep less have increased levels of ghrelin (an appetite hormone that signals hunger) and lower levels of leptin (an appetite hormone that signals fullness). People’s weight gain is most likely due to these changes in hormone levels. In this study, less than 5 hours of sleep per night was considered bad and 8 hours healthy. For participants who slept less than 8 hours a night, the increased body mass index (BMI) was proportional to the reduction in sleep.
