For Russian media platforms like Yandex.Music, they can introduce mandatory self-censorship. This was stated by the chairman of the Duma Committee on Information Policy, Alexander Khinshtein. On his Telegram channel, he announced a legislative initiative that would force sites to moderate their content and remove prohibited materials.

Media platforms will be required to moderate content and remove prohibited materials.

The deputy was outraged by the fact that Yandex.Music did not remove “frankly Russophobic and extremist compositions.” According to him, subscribers complained about the service to Khinshtein.

According to the deputy, Roskomnadzor should not manually find such materials on a daily basis. These tasks must be performed by the platforms themselves. Khinshtein emphasized that Yandex is not ready to do this “willingly”, therefore strict legislative regulation is required.

“Together with Roskomnadzor, we are starting to develop a legislative initiative that will force such platforms to moderate their content and proactively remove anything that violates the law,” Khinshtein wrote.

Hefty fines will be imposed on companies for non-compliance with the requirements, the parliamentarian added.

Khinshtein also recalled that similar measures against social networks had been introduced before. The MP said the bill could be introduced in the spring session.
