The Ministry of Industry and Commerce offered manufacturers of smartphones and tablets running Aurora OS to start their retail sales. In addition, the ministry prohibited employees from using tablets on any operating system other than Aurora for work purposes, Kommersant learned.
One of the interlocutors of the publication from the field of electronics believes that devices on the Aurora OS can be in demand only in the public sector or at companies with state participation. For the average user, there is “no motivation” to switch to a new operating platform from the familiar Android or iOS.
Also, devices based on the Russian operating system are more expensive than their foreign counterparts. Now the average cost of one device is about 50-60 thousand rubles, “while, in technical terms, Russian devices are weaker,” said Alexei Smirnov, chairman of the Basalt SPO board of directors.
He also added that “creating a complete application software ecosystem for the Aurora operating system will take another two to three years,” since most of the required programs do not yet work on this platform.
- In January 2023, the Ministry of Digital Transformation reviewed the funding of the operating system (OS) Aurora: the department excluded 22 billion rubles from its digital transformation program, which were supposed to go to the development of the operating system in the coming two years.
- According to plans, the national mobile ecosystem based on the Aurora operating system should be created by 2030. It will be based on Android. Rostelecom estimated the cost of the project, which also involves the release of 70 million mobile devices for all market segments, at 480 billion rubles.
