The discovery involves research teams from the University of Adelaide (Australia), the University of Nottingham (UK), Penn State University (US) and the University of Bologna. It is the discovery of a gene in the grain and inbarley that will create new species cereals. All even in conditions of lack of water and nutrients.

The gene is called EGT1, it regulates a growth angle of the roots of plants. A way to make roots that are deeper and more drought tolerant, even when there are no nutrients. An effective method to climate change.

Thanks to the images taken underground thanks to X-ray microtomography, we found that plants in which the EGT1 gene has been deactivated develop roots with a steeper growth angle. Surprisingly, the roots behave as if they are even more sensitive to gravity: they can no longer grow outwards but grow straight down. Shallow roots better capture phosphate that accumulates in the more superficial layers of the soil, while steeper roots better search for water and nitrates in the deeper layers. Steeper roots are also important for capturing carbon deeper in the soil. Discovering genes like EGT1 and how they control root growth angle is key to developing new crop varieties that better absorb nutrients and carbon.

Haoyu Lou, University of Adelaide, lead author of the study

In short, deeper roots indicate greater resistance to water deficiency and better finding ability nutrients. The discovery of EGT1 is essential for the development of new cereals that are better suited to the sudden climate change.
