Researchers from the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) have developed a bone fixator that does not block X-rays.
The Ilizarov apparatus, currently used to heal fractures, can seal bones and joints on X-rays. Russian scientists have created a mini-fixer. Instead of metal structures, polymer composites are used, which are not inferior to them in strength and can transmit X-rays.
The new fixator is lighter and cheaper to manufacture than the Ilizarov apparatus. It can also be customized according to the needs of each patient.
FEFU Faculty of Medicine professor Alexander Zolotov said the device has already been used to treat three patients. The latch turned out to be useful and beneficial in relieving serious chronic deformities of the fingers.
