The excitement of the Barbie and Oppenheimer movies is being used by hackers to scam online. According to Thursday’s report (20) by Kaspersky, a company operating in the field of cybersecurity software development, criminals aim to steal money and personal data to implement fraud.

Scams related to “Barbieheimer” include selling special editions of the doll and streaming Christopher Nolan’s movie online. Check out more details below.

Criminals for crime using the Greta Gerwig-directed movie use a scam page that offers special versions of Barbie dolls. Options include limited editions of the movie like the lead actor for around £12. You can also add a helicopter for £56 (R$34.50 on July 20) with a ‘exclusive store sale’.

The victim, who clicks on the ad, is directed to a form that asks for personal and bank information, which is sent directly to the scammers. The risk is not limited to financial, as stolen data can be sold on the Dark Web.

As for Oppenheimer, the scammers offer free streaming but charge a nominal dollar or euro fee for registration. Criminals require a debit card to be registered to complete registration, allowing unauthorized payments on user accounts and difficult to cancel.

“Events like big premieres and highly anticipated movies bring a surge of anticipation, but amid this excitement it’s crucial that users stay vigilant and follow basic online safety rules,” said Kaspersky security expert Olga Svistunova.
