This is the first successful demonstration of an industrial-scale geothermal system (EGS). Geothermal power plants use the earth’s natural heat to generate electricity, and Fervo’s EGS method involves creating artificial cracks in rocks to increase “flow.”

The company plans to connect Google’s Project Red facility, which will power data centers and other infrastructure facilities in Nevada, to the grid this year. Geothermal energy contains no carbon and can run continuously, making it an attractive renewable energy source.
