Chromecast with Google TV will be officially available from the end of June. Unlike a regular Chromecast, this variant gives you the full-fledged Google TV with remote, so you can turn any television into a smart TV.

Chromecast with Google TV has been around for almost two years. Only Google gives Netherlands little priority, so Chromecast (along with other products like Pixel smartphones) was not available here. If you want to buy one, you can do it via gray import or buy from abroad. For example France, Germany or England. This leads to higher costs and difficulties with warranty.

Chromecast with Google TV will be officially available in the Netherlands from June 21. In addition to the Google Store, other (web) stores such as Media Markt, Coolblue and Bol.com will also sell the media player.

The difference between a regular Chromecast and a Chromecast with Google TV is that the latter offers the full version of the Google TV TV operating system to your TV. To do this, simply connect the device to the TV’s HDMI port and supply power to the device via the USB-C connection.

Since Google TV is a full version of Android, you get all the streaming apps, but you can easily cast media to your television via your smartphone or tablet. It’s also handy that you can create a remote on your screen via the Google Home app. There is also a physical remote control.

For control, Google insists in its press releases that Google Assistant is built in. That way, you can adjust what you want to watch (or listen to, of course) via voice control. But also use normal voice commands, for example to operate the smart lighting or the thermostat. Since Google TV is a full Android version, you can also block microphone access in settings so that your Chromecast does not constantly listen to what is being said.

Image quality

Chromecast with Google TV supports 4K resolution, HDR, Dolby Vision and HDMI pass-through with a maximum refresh rate of 60 hertz. For example, Chromecast is a valuable add-on for modern televisions as well as older televisions that often lack smart TV functions.

Also, Google TV is an improvement for many smart TVs with older or less functional operating systems. Think Samsung televisions with Tizen or LG smart TVs with WebOS.

availability

From June 21, Chromecast with Google TV will be available for € 69.99. Chromecast with Google TV in other countries is available in three different colors: white, teal and pink. The included remote control has the same color. In the Netherlands it remains (for now) with the white version.
