HP has announced new versions of its gaming laptops like the Omen 16. This variant offers AMD’s Ryzen 6000 H line of processors alongside, among other things, the twelfth generation Intel processor. What else is changing under the hood?

The new HP Omen 16 can also be equipped with Nvidia’s RTX 3070 Ti, 150-watt TDP, up to 32GB of working memory and fast PCI 4.0 SSDs. The AMD variant has a maximum of 1 TB; The Intel version offers 2TB.

Judging by the design of the laptop, it is the same as last year’s model. The biggest optical difference with this variant is the touchpad. Much wider this time. In terms of design, everything remained as it was, including the large 16:10 display with a thick chin at the bottom. By default, this display offers full HD at 60 Hertz; but you can increase it to qhd and 165 hertz.

If you choose the model with a built-in Intel processor, the HP Omen 16 has two Thunderbolt 4.0 ports on the side. A must for AMD versions. We also see three USB-a ports, one HDMI 2.1 port, a micro SD card slot, a headphone jack and an Ethernet port. Finally, there is an opening for the power cord.

HP launches new cooling system

HP also claims that the cooling system on the Omen 16 has been overhauled. For example, a fifth heatpipe and a fourth opening through which the laptop blows warm wind have been added so the animal can stay cool during intense gaming sessions. This should also result in a 36 percent increase in processing power (although it’s no longer clear under what circumstances HP is testing this). Also, the SSD’s temperature dropped by fourteen percent and the system should be five percent quieter.

Also, there are no notable differences with last year’s model. Since the laptop is geared towards gamers, you can adjust the per-key color via RGB. You can control this via Omen Gaming Hub, one of the programs included as standard on the device. Finally, there is support for WiFi 6e, so when it comes to new WiFi standards, it’s at least temporarily available.

price and availability

HP has yet to reveal when or if this version of the Omen 16 will arrive in the Netherlands. In the United States, however, the laptop will be available from summer for a minimum price of $1,999.
