The state of Illinois passed the first law in the United States to protect the income of child influencers. According to him, part of the money earned by underage bloggers will be kept in the account until they turn 18 years old.
Governor Jay Robert Pritzker signed the law into law on August 11, Business Insider reports. As indicated in the document, minors under the age of 16 who are influencers or whose parents post photos and videos of them on social networks will be entitled to a certain percentage of the income from this content. The percentage depends on how often the child appears in the frame.
This money will need to be transferred to a trust account until the child turns 18. Otherwise, child bloggers will be able to go to court. The law will enter into force on July 1, 2024.

According to the Associated Press, the bill was initiated by 15-year-old Shreya Nallamotu: She turned to state Sen. David Koehler, who drafted the bill.
“I realized that there can be many cases of exploitation in the world of influential children,” Nallamotu said. “And I realized that there was absolutely no legislation to protect children.”
The publication compares the Influential Children’s Income Protection Act to the Coogan Bill of 1939. Silent film actor Jackie Coogan then sued his parents for embezzling his fortune.
The law, which is still in force in several states, required parents of child actors to transfer 15% of the child’s royalties to a bank account opened in their name until the child turned 18.
