A third of Russians (36%) are willing to spend time and money on additional education for fear of losing their job and facing the consequences of their own laziness, the Skyeng online English school has found.

Anxiety associated with the risks of losing a job or not getting the expected promotion turned out to be a stronger motivator compared with the promised benefits of training, the study found. Just over 24% of respondents indicated the possibility of rewards as the main incentive.

Another 20% indicated that they did not think about their motivation to learn, and around 10% said that they were inspired by an idol.

At the same time, the absolute majority (93% of respondents) noted that they are engaged in self-education. Two thirds (66%) spend one to five hours a week on self-study, a quarter (26%) five to ten hours, and about 8% spend more than ten hours a week on self-education.

For almost half (42%), the main obstacle to gaining new knowledge and skills was the high workload. Another 38% admitted that they do not have time to do anything.

With the spread of online learning and educational videos on the Internet (49% of respondents prefer to watch YouTube videos, learning with an online tutor – 22%).

The company surveyed 19,000 people across the country ages 18 and older.
