The miraculous emergence after 25 years of hiding has led to a “walking fish”, also called “Narrow-handed” (Pezichthys compressus), seen in southeast Australia for the first time in 25 years, according to a United Nations statement. Commonwealth of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIRO).
The animal was last seen in 1996 on a remote island in Bass Strait, caught on camera by the deep sea tug of the research vessel RV Investigator at a depth of 292 meters northeast of Flinders Island in Tasmaniaduring an expedition studying the effect of climate on the sea.
“Walking Fish” was discovered by CSIRO in 1986.
This is a very rare fish and hard to find as it lives down to 300 meters and has a very limited distribution. It has a very distinctive shape and features such as hand-shaped pectoral and pelvic fins that allow it to walk on the seafloor. It also has a laterally compressed body, a large head, and small eyes. The coloration is dark brown with uneven white spots. Its maximum size is about 13 centimeters in length.
There are 14 known species of narrow-bodied penfish that live exclusively in southern Australia.
