Scientists from the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry. ONE. Frumkin first created and described a new chemical element, rhenium, in the form of polyoxometalate. They successfully isolated this element using a specific buffer in acidic medium and formed an asymmetric polyanion with rhenium in the +7 oxidation state. This compound contains four rhenium atoms connected via oxygen bridges and is key to understanding the properties and chemical reactions of both rhenium and the related element technetium.

However, creating a polyoxometalate crystal suitable for research turned out to be a difficult task because the crystals often form twins or trap solvent molecules, which can lead to the destruction of the structure. This required the selection of optimal synthesis conditions and the use of argon cans to avoid exposure to moisture and external agents.

The researchers believe that understanding the chemistry of rhenium and technetium could be important for industrial processes, including the isolation of technetium from reprocessed nuclear fuel solutions. This scientific breakthrough opens up new avenues for the development of nuclear technology and the understanding of chemical processes in this field.
